ALBAWABA - There's an emoji that speaks to the universal experience of exhaustion: a weary face with bags under its eyes. This new emoji is among eight others set to make their debut on smartphones and computers in 2025.
Other additions to the emoji lineup include a root vegetable, a harp, a leafless tree, a fingerprint, a shovel, a purple splatter, and a flag representing the remote island of Sark in the English Channel.
Emojipedia, a leading emoji reference site, released sample images of these new emojis earlier this year. The Unicode Consortium, the non-profit organization overseeing global emoji standards, recently approved the additions.
The exhausted face emoji took top honors in the World Emoji Awards, securing over 60% of the vote as the "most anticipated" emoji. The splatter and shovel emojis also garnered significant attention, placing second and third, respectively.

While some of the new emojis might seem lighthearted, the leafless tree holds a deeper meaning. Submitted by Brian Baihaki, it aims to raise awareness about drought and climate change. Baihaki explained that while drought is a natural part of the climate cycle, the increasing frequency and severity of droughts due to climate change are cause for concern.
Different operating systems and companies often put their own unique spin on emoji designs. These interpretations can sometimes lead to controversy, as seen in Google's past mistakes with their beer and hamburger emojis. However, such issues are typically addressed and corrected.
