Industry experts predict that the planned expansion of the Sharjah Airport will likely result in dramatic transformation for the airport's retail landscape.

The project, which includes several expansion components including increasing a main hall area from 90 square meters to an impressive 500 square meters, is expected to culminate in the potential accommodation of eight million passengers annually.

As a result, the airport's retail landscape will be directly influenced, according to Gulf News, with expansion opportunities for duty-free shops and the entrance of numerous luxury brands in to the airport's stores.

"The airport is going through the biggest change in its history and we want to give the airport a new look and contribute to its success," said Eugene Barry, general manager of Dufry Sharjah, the company managing and supplying the airport's duty-free stores.

Barry added that shops in the arrivals hall, departures hall, and public spaces will all take ownership of larger retail spaces in the coming months. The spacious settings will provide a backdrop to offer a new assortment of goods, he said.

According to Barry, the size of the new storefronts has yet to be finalized, but that they should be fully compete by February 2007 or earlier.
