A monthly report issued by the Irbid Chamber of Commerce and Industry indicates that $27.8 million worth of exports originated from Jordan’s Hassan Industrial Estate in August 2001, compared with $25.2 million during the previous month of July, and $10.9 million in August 2000.
According to Al-Rai, The estate’s export commodities include mainly clothes, plastic products, leather products, veterinary pharmaceutical, agricultural fertilizers and engineering products. The head of the Irbid Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mahir Nassir, stated that 80 factories presently operate in the Hassan Industrial Estate, employing 16,000 workers, of whom 13,000 are Jordanian nationals.
Official statistics indicate that the Jordanian manufacturing industries’ total exports, excluding cement and fertilizer exports, amounted to JD 472.5 million in the first seven months of 2001. This export value constitutes 65.5 percent of the total national exports during the same period, according to Addustour. In addition, this export volume constitutes a 40 percent jump compared with the corresponding period in the previous year. — (Mena Report)
