ALBAWABA - As the biggest World Cup ever draws to a close with Spain lifting the trophy for the second time - FIFA emerges as the biggest winner with $9 billion in the bank from the tournament.
This edition of the World Cup is breaking records as being the biggest and most lucrative event in sports and entertainment history, with figures such as Madonna, Justin Bieber, BTS and Shakira performing at the World Cup’s first ever half-time show; alongside a plethora of celebrities and important figures in the sidelines.
As Spain scored their winning goal against Argentina in extra time, winning 0-1 against Leo Messi’s squad, it took home its second World Cup trophy since their win in 2010 against the Netherlands. And while La Roja took home the World Cup; FIFA took home $9 billion in revenue.
What really lined FIFA’s pockets was the increase of the number of teams participating in the tournament, up to 48 from 32. That means 104 matches instead of 64 which in turn means more tickets, more broadcasts, and more bets. The move being the brainchild of FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Some speculate that the next edition of the World Cup in 2030 would host a further whopping 64 countries, a third of all football teams, to celebrate the event’s centennial, and ensuring maximum profits for FIFA.
