French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian on Thursday announced his country's intentions to loan one billion euros to Jordan between 2019 and 2021.

The announcement came up during a meeting between Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Le Drian where the two discussed bilateral ties and ways of strengthening them and the latest region developments.

Le Drian expressed his gratitude towards Jordan's' humanitarian role in aiding the Syrian refugees, saying France will be providing 1 billion euros to Jordan during the next three years after already providing 600 million euros from 2016 to 2018.

Le Drian hailed Jordan's role in receiving the French Air Force to participate in the war against terrorist activities as a massive step forward strengthening the bilateral relationship between the countries within the framework of new projects and joint action to establish peace in the region.

He said France and Jordan share the same stance on the Syrian crisis, calling for a political solution and ensuring a safe passage for the Syrian refugees across the border.

On his part, Safadi said the borders will be opened when political and security conditions make it possible, pointing to a memo signed last year by Jordan, USA and Russia as part of the southern Syrian de-escalation zone accord.

France is a major foreign investor in Jordan with an amount of US 1 billion, and Jordan hosts 30 French establishments employing 6,000 Jordanian citizens. The volume of trade exchange between the two countries reached US 411 million last year.
