The German foreign ministry is going to offer the financial assistance to Iraq in the field of clearing land-mines.
A statement by the ministry has revealed that the assistance will amount to 674,000 euro. This sum will be granted to a German organization that will train and offer the needed knowledge and experience for a special staff to clear mines in Baghdad and its vicinities.
In this context, Tom Konegs, the German governmental official in charge of political matters, human rights and humanitarian assistance, said that the project of clearing the mines has been supported since 2003. He revealed that in the last few months technicians were trained in Jordan fro this purpose. He added, according to <i>Azzaman</i> newspaper, that a 1 million square meters were cleared from mines , and 14 tons of explosives were destroyed.
