Huge sugar factory opened in Iran

A huge sugar factory came on stream on Wednesday in a ceremony attended by President Mohammad Khatami. The President, who was on a two-day visit to Khuzestan province to inaugurate a number of projects, inspected the sugarcane farmlands and Mirza Kouchak Khan sugarcane processing facilities.


According to IRNA, Mirza Kouchak Khan sugar cane plant has the capacity to produce 100,000 tons of sugar from one million tons of sugarcane a year. Executive operations on the project began in 1993 and sugarcane is under cultivation in 8,318 hectares out of 12,300 hectares of the regional farmlands.


The project has cost rls 650 billion plus US$ 45 million and has created 1,500 jobs directly and more than 2,000 jobs indirectly.
