The Jordanian government has a signed an agreement with an international consortium to carry out the Al-Samra wastewater treatment project, valued at 110 million Jordanian dinars ($156 million), reported Petra.
The consortium will finance half of the project’s cost and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide a grant to cover the remaining half. The plant has a target date of completion set for 2006.
The consortium is comprised of France’s Ondeo Degrement, and US-based Morganti Group. The Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) project aims to improve the environmental conditions of the city as well as the quality of water from the King Talal Dam. The plant will also provide water for irrigation and other agricultural purposes.
Jordan is one of the ten most water-deprived countries on earth. Ninety percent of the Kingdom receives less than eight inches of rain annually. Of that, 90 percent is lost to evaporation. The Jordanian government expects to treat over 90 percent of its wastewater in the near future. — (menareport.com)
