According to Al Hayat daily, Iraq imported during the financial year of 2003/2004 about 800,000 cars from all kinds, sizes, and country of origin. This number equals to what Iraq imported within 20 years before the ouster of the Baa'th regime, during which the average imports were 40,000 cars a year.

The total number of cars registered until 2001 was about 1 million. Dividing this number by 80 (The age of the Modern Iraq) the annual average is 16,000 cars.

By mid- 2004, the number of general transportation vehicles (transit, buses, and minibuses) was 1.2 million vehicles.
