A Japanese-equipped Global Development Learning Network (GDLN) center opened Thursday, July 5, at Jordan University as part of a drive to bolster information technology (IT) in the kingdom, officials said.
The project is a joint scheme involving Jordan, Japan and the World Bank, with Tokyo providing the center with equipment worth $300,000, the Japanese embassy in Amman said in a statement.
The GDLN center is "expected to help Jordan make the best use of IT for its economic, social and academic development" and provide decision-makers in Jordan "with access to colleagues who face similar challengers all over the world," the statement said.
Japanese experts were due in Amman in September to "develop education standards and efficiency at the center," the statement said.
The center consists of two facilities ― a television conference room and a multimedia learning room ― aimed at "serving as a core center for distance learning in Jordan".
"This project is also quite significant for Japan since it is the first joint cooperation project in the IT field between the government of Japan and the World Bank all over the world," the statement said. ― (AFP, Amman)
