The Saudi Minister of Rural and Municipal Affairs recently signed three contracts valued 121.8 million Saudi riyals ($32.4 million) to pave and maintain central and southern roads in Jeddah. Recipients of the contract were the national Al-Safa Public Contracting Company and the General Agencies Company, according to KsaToday daily.
The projects, expected to be executed within 36 months are part of the country’s campaign to improve its road and highway system. The number of paved roads in the Kingdom grew by an average rate of 15.8 percent annually between 1980 and 1995. By 1999, nearly SR 140 billion was invested in road projects, bringing the total number of roads to over 150,000 kilometers. — (MENA Report)
