The Jordanian Ministry of Post and Communications is set for the e-Government for Development Conference taking place in Palermo, Italy, on April 10-11, 2002. The Italian e-government initiative was the result of the G8 Leaders 2000 Summit, which saw this as part of the Digital Opportunity Task Force (DOT) agenda, an Italian-led unit responsible for coordinating the international action in the field of e-government and launching specific initiatives to the benefit of developing countries. Over 500 international delegates are
expected to attend the two-day, 10 session event.
“The Italian Ministry of Innovation and Technology has been charged with coordinating and overseeing this international initiative and has chosen Jordan as one of five countries to partner with in the development of an e-government model,” said Fawaz Zu’bi, Jordan’s Minister of Post and Communications. “This initiative is driven by the collective efforts of
participating members in the development of a real-world model that aims to bridge the gap between successful e-government development and the implementation of such a model in developing countries. This collective effort can demonstrate how technology can empower government to improve the quality, efficiency and success of service delivery to its citizens.”
The DOT Force will be developing a digital model for e-government implementation to address real-world requirements for successful easy to use implementation by developing nations. Jordan’s e-government team had met with the Italians in March 2002 in preparations for this conference.
The Ministry of Post and Communications is responsible for articulating policy in the areas of information technology, telecommunications, and post in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. With the objective of providing Jordanians access to benefits of information and communications technologies (ICT), the Ministry’s mandate includes ensuring an enabling environment for ICT investment, overseeing promotion of ICT opportunities in Jordan, and
creating national awareness about the importance of the sector to economic development. Dubbed as Jordan’s e-Ministry, it has also been assigned the responsibility of overseeing the Jordan e-Government Initiative. — (menareport.com)
