Qatar is committed to improving workers’ conditions and guaranteeing their rights, Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs HE Yousuf Mohamed al Othman Fakhroo has said.

“Qatar is witnessing an all-round renaissance and development, especially in the economic, developmental and social fields. This unprecedented development has attracted large numbers of expatriate workers who are part of Qatar’s development process. Qatar has made continuous efforts to implement measures and reforms on labour laws, in response to the growing demand of employment,” the minister said during the International Workers’ Day 2019 celebration organised by the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs on Wednesday.

He said a number of initiatives such as Wage Protection System, setting a minimum wage and establishing joint labour committees have been taken to ensure the rights of workers.

Houtan Homayounpour, Head of the ILO office in Doha, said Qatar deserves to be honoured for its great efforts to protect the rights of expatriate workers.

“Since the opening of the ILO office in Doha, Qatar has impressed everyone with efforts that guarantee best conditions for workers. We are so proud of our partnership with Qatar in this field and for the achievements they have made,” he said, adding that Qatar has taken many effective measures such as cancelling the exit permits for the vast majority of workers and residents.

A representative of the International Trade Union Confederation said the union is very happy with the measures taken by Qatar.

Fahad al Dosari, Director of International Labor Relations at MADLSA, said the government is keen to issue laws that favour expatriate workers. It is worth mentioning that the celebration of the International Workers’ Day this year coincides with the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the International Labor Organization, which since its inception has been one of the main pillars in helping the countries of the world organize the relationship between the three parties. Qatar, through its technical cooperation agreement with the ILO, has implemented many projects, programmes and plans, through which tangible achievements have been achieved on the ground.
