Almost a decade ago, the international community had committed to financially supporting the Lebanese farmers in a bid to encourage them to cease drugs cultivation. So far, however, those farmers claim they have received no international aid, although they have stopped growing cannabis and other illegal plants, reported Al-Ittihad.
Consequently, frustrated Lebanese farmers have recently threatened to resume growing drugs due to the prevailing economic crisis in Lebanon and the disability of the local government to market ordinary crops. Recently published reports show that villagers in the Hermel Valley in Bekaa re-started to cultivate opiate drugs, hashish and marijuana. — (Mena Report)
