Middle East Airlines, Lebanon’s national carrier, has been ranked the No. 2 airline in the Middle East in TripAdvisor’s recent annual Traveler’s Choice Awards.

According to a press release from TripAdvisor, “Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of airline reviews and ratings submitted by travelers worldwide.” The final rankings are meant to reflect both quality of service and value for money.

MEA came in second in the region behind Emirates, which TripAdvisor had named the best airline in the world in 2017.

“Really, we are happy that our passengers appreciate our service,” MEA Chairman Mohammad al-Hout told The Daily Star.

“We will keep giving our maximum effort to give our customers what they deserve.”

TripAdvisor is the world’s largest travel site, with over 600 million reviews and an average of 455 million unique monthly visitors, according to its media release.

“We’re thrilled to recognize the global TripAdvisor community’s favorite airlines and shine a spotlight on the carriers around the world that provide the very best flying experiences,” said Bryan Saltzburg, senior vice president and general manager for TripAdvisor Flights.

“This is our national airline, so it definitely makes me proud. I’ve had many flights on MEA, and it’s a smooth ride every time,” a travel blogger who goes by eat.sleep.vlog on Instagram told The Daily Star.

“As a travel blogger I can’t but be super happy that a small country like ours has great local airlines.”

TripAdvisor users rank airlines based on a number of criteria, including service, legroom, food and beverage, ease of boarding and check-in, and in-flight entertainment and cleanliness.

“Very nice, comfortable and genuine flight ... very friendly and active crew, the smoothest takeoff and landing ever,” TripAdvisor user FirasTG from Amman wrote in one review. “I travelled with this airline 11 years ago and once again this July. The service was exactly the same if [not] better. I hope it continues,” user Bijoux2015 wrote from London in another.

Last month, MEA launched a direct route to Madrid, bringing the total number of international cities to which it offers direct flights to 31.
