Water and wastewater treatment company METITO has completed work on a 14 million Emirati dirham ($3.8 million) contract to build a desalination plant at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Port of Fujairah that will supply fresh water to ships and barges.
The plant has sufficient capacity to produce enough water every day to supply over 10,000 people. The project was undertaken by METITO on behalf of the Fujairah Fresh Water Productions Company Ltd.
The sea water desalination plant utilizes reverse osmosis technology. The facility directly pumps fresh drinking water on to ships and barges that dock at the east coast port.
“A crucial part of the services offered by major international ports is the provision of fresh drinking water to vessels, which dock at them. But in a region like the UAE where water is such a scarce resource, supplying such a quantity of water can impact on the reserves for the local population,” commented METITO (Overseas) Ltd. Managing Director Fady Juez.
The scope of work for the project included turnkey design, engineering, fabrication supply, installation, commissioning, full operation, preventive maintenance and all electrical, mechanical and civil engineering components of the work undertaken.
METITO provided self-sustaining water systems for tourism complexes in the Gulf and Egypt, as well as delivered offshore solutions for the oil industry. It has completed a $22 million project in Indonesia constructing a sea water desalination plant to supply eight oil rigs with fresh water for thousands of oil workers in the region.
METITO runs its operations from its regional headquarters in Sharjah, UAE, and has a factory and laboratory facility in the Hamriya Free Zone. The company’s operations in Egypt and North Africa are managed from its offices in Cairo. — (menareport.com)
