The Moroccan seaports authority has recently announced that the total output of fish reached 55,156 last June, valued at MD 284.6 million. Morocco is one of the most important fish producing countries in Africa, second only to Nigeria, and ranked first in the world in sardine production and exportation.
As part of agreements consolidated with other countries, Morocco grants certain foreign fleets access to its abundant fishing resources. Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reported that, in accordance with the recent Moroccan-European accord, more than 600 Spanish boats have operated in Moroccan waters over the past four years. During this period, the Spanish fleet has acquired a total amount of 200,000 tons of fish annually from Moroccan waters, estimated at 40 billion pesetas. –(Albawaba-MEBG)
