In the first eight months of 2001, 1.65 million tourists visited Morocco, a 10 percent rise compared with the corresponding period in the previous year, according to a senior official at the Moroccan Tourism Ministry. The official added that tourism revenues totaled $1.46 billion last July, a 39 percent increase from July 2000, Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported.
Despite these positive statistics, the September 11 terror attacks in the US and the war in Afghanistan have caused uncertainty regarding the performance of this vital sector for the remaining months of 2001. — (Mena Report)
