Morocco exported 1,286 tons of leather goods in the last eight months of 2001, a 55 percent increase compared to the same period last year, reported MAP.

In a bid to restructure its leather industry, the Moroccan government began subjecting leather export shipments to authorization checks in April 2001. In order to make the industry more efficient, the government plans to set up of a technical center to monitor the quality of leather, and create a leather-manufacturing compound with the collaboration of the Italian Leather Association.

Morocco has approximately 270 leather-processing units and two leather training institutes, employing 15,000 persons. Shoe making plays an important role in Morocco’s leather industry as the country produces and exports close to 100 million pairs of shoes annually. — (menareport.com)
