New energy pipeline to link Cyprus, Syria

In an effort to stay ahead of the global fuel crisis, the small island nation of Cyprus is planning to construct a 196 kilometer-long natural gas pipeline from Syria to Limassol.

The Cypriot government is currently engaged in "top secret" negotiations with an American company, which expressed an interest in constructing a pipeline - from Palmyra, Syria, to Limassol's Vassiliko power plant - a project valued at an estimated $310 million.

According to the Cyprus Weekly, should the bid go forward, it would make Cyprus a regional energy centre, able to supply nations across the EU.

Cyprus is not alone in trying to reduce it dependence on oil, to beat spiraling costs and environmental side effects. Israel and Egypt are also exploring natural gas as an alternative. –(Albawaba-MEBG)
