A new statistical report published by the Tunisian ministry of development and international cooperation in the Tunisian French language Le Temps newspaper, Thursday November 4, has identified the changing nature of the Tunisian family. Nowadays, according to the report, 90% of Tunisians enjoy clean drinking water and electricity and 80% own their own properties.
Average income per head has tripled from 1986 to 2004 and only 4.2% fall below the poverty line. Food and housing respectively constituted 41% and 28% of household expenses in 1980. In 2004, they constitute respectively 37% and 22%.
Women in the work force has risen from between 1975 and 2003, 19% in the 20 to 30 age group and by 24% in the 30 to 40 age group. Females now represent 55.1% of the total number of students as opposed to only 22% in 1970. (menareport.com)
