Abu Dhabi City Municipality Opens 38th Plantation Week at Formal Park
In the presence of Sheikh Ahmed bin Nasser bin Zayed Al Nahyan, HE Saif Badr Al Qubaisi, General Manager of Abu Dhabi City Municipality has opened today Tuesday, 20 February 2018, the 38th Plantation Week themed 'Sustainable Green Environment' at the Formal Park on Abu Dhabi Corniche. A mega festivity with a host of activities was held to this effect featuring the participation of a number of institutions and strategic partners. The Plantation Week continues up to 22/02/2018,.
In his speech at the opening ceremony of the event, HE Saif Badr Al Qubaisi, General Manager of Abu Dhabi City Municipality, offered his thanks and appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, for his ongoing support for landscaping projects. HE expressed his sincere thanks to HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces cum Chairman of the Executive Council, for his keen attention to follow up the plantation plans and consolidate the successful practices. Al Qubaisi stressed that the Municipality would be guided in projects in all general and landscaping projects in particular by the wise approach adopted by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, “Compeller of Desert” and founder of the agricultural and landscaping renaissance seen by the UAE.
"Abu Dhabi Municipality is poised to press ahead with its plantation drive, widen greens, and increase parks to bring happiness & luxury for the entire population, provide entertainment facilities and at the same time meet the sustainable development standards, conserve nature & protect the environment," noted Al Qubaisi.
Al Qubaisi added: "The theme of the 38th Plantation Week: 'Sustainable Green Environment' calls for overcoming the climate conditions & water scarcity and enable the landscaping to drive through many mega projects. The ADM is honoured to supervise and be part of the successful giant agricultural drive, and leading supporter of the agricultural renaissance witnessed by Abu Dhabi." Al Qubaisi reiterated the Municipality's strong determination to increase greenery achievements and landscaped areas, spread parks throughout the city & residential neighbourhoods, and embed the values of sustainability in agricultural and landscaping projects. He thanked all municipal strategic partners for their commendable role in advancing the agricultural drive and environmental protection.
The opening ceremony
The opening ceremony of the Plantation Week comprised a plethora of spots including artistic performances on the plantation, the environment, values of sustainability, and the agricultural renaissance in the UAE in cooperation with school students. In addition, Sheikh Ahmed bin Nasser bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the General Manager of the Abu Dhabi City Municipality accompanied the guests and planted a date-tree as an annual tradition on this occasion. Then they opened the accompanying agricultural exhibition where the latest agricultural technologies and irrigation methods are on display. They also opened the photo gallery, which documents the stages of the agricultural renaissance in the UAE, set up at the Formal Park. Sheikh Ahmed bin Nasser Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan and the General Manager of the Abu Dhabi City Municipality along with school children planted flower seedlings on this occasion, toured the children's workshops and viewed their works and contributions to the Plantation Week.
This year's Plantation Week focuses on fostering a partnership with the community in order to achieve sustainability standards and preserve agriculture, parks and green spaces. The Plantation Week is keen to involve school students by conducting children-oriented workshops to teach them the principles of farming and encourage environmental conservation and natural resources protection.
Thousands of seedlings and flowers
The municipality and its foreign centers distributed more than 2,500 seedlings of fruit trees, desert plants and various flowers to the residents for free at the site of the celebrations of the planting week, in order to encourage them to plant and spread the green color on the occasion of the launch of the planting events.
As part of the 38th Plantation Week, Abu Dhabi City Municipality has unveiled scores of agricultural, irrigation and park projects aimed to enhance the aesthetic appearance of Abu Dhabi city and environs, and nurture an ideal living environment in harmony with the aesthetic nature of Abu Dhabi city. These projects also provide a gorgeous natural avenue with health facilities so that community member, especially children, practice sport. Here is a list of the key projects:
Irrigation and landscaping
The Municipality is about to complete the irrigation and landscaping project on Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Street and the entrance of Al Reem Island as part of Phase III. The completion rate has topped 97%, and the project is poised for completion in May 2018.
The project aims to upgrade Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Street and Al Mina Street by completing their sidewalks and improve the streetscape by adding greens and parasols and nurture a healthy environment for the residents and visitors. A cycling track connected to other tracks is designed as part of the cycling track general plan within Abu Dhabi city, at a total cost of AED 61,800,000.
Projects on Abu Dhabi Island
During the next two months, the Municipality will start the rehabilitation of the roadside landscaping project on Abu Dhabi Island (The Ideal Project on Al Bateen Street). This project, which is the first phase of medians landscaping project, includes the rehabilitation of medians & roadsides landscape in Al Bateen area within Abu Dhabi Island (Al Bateen Street). This would improve Abu Dhabi's overall aesthetic appearance as well as the soft and hard landscape in line with Abu Dhabi Strategic Plan 2030. It would also provide safe pedestrian, running and cycling tracks.
These projects would also cut operation & maintenance cost, and rationalise irrigation water consumption using modern and automatic irrigation systems. The cost of the project is AED 20,330,000 and is expected to complete in 2019.
Parks and playgrounds on the mainland:
The Municipality approved the design of ten parks and one playground on the mainland in Wathba, Bani Yas, Nahdha, Mu'azz, Shakhbout city and Shawamekh. In selecting the soft & hard landscaping materials and the appropriate games for the targeted age groups, the project observed the sustainability standards adopted in Abu Dhabi emirate, along with the Public Realms Design Guide, and Urban Streets Design Guide. The estimated total cost of the project is AED 60,250,000.
In selecting these areas, attention was given to their need of parks, the location of recreation sites and population density.
These projects are a priority as they provide community services, meet the demands of citizens & residents and contribute to providing a venue for families and children in the residential sectors. This would have a positive bearing on public health and provide welfare and happiness to the population. The projects also include establishing six parks in Shahama and Bahia as part of a project run by Abu Dhabi Public Services Company (Musanada) at an estimated cost tag of AED 56,000,000. The design and implementation standards shall comply with the approved standards regarding the projects run by the Abu Dhabi City Municipality.
