ADM Launches 3-Day Inspection Campaigns on Men's Salons in Musaffah Industrial, Serves 35 Warnings

The Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport (DMAT) - Abu Dhabi City Municipality has carried out a three-day inspection campaign targeting 235 men’s salons in Musaffah Industrial. The campaign, which resulted in serving 35 warnings, aimed at keeping barber shops in check and verifying their compliance with the Municipality’s health standards and stipulations. The campaign is also intended to raise awareness among salon workers, and highlight to them the importance of observing the prescribed guidelines and laws to maintain the safety of the community.
The campaign also stressed to salon workers the importance of using sterilisers properly to conserve public health and mandated them to clean their shops and remove hair cuttings immediately after each haircut service. The campaign also verified the compliance of hairdressers with the laws applicable in Abu Dhabi such preventing unhygienic makeshift washbasins. The inspectors called on salon owners to provide safety & security measures including first aid kits and fire extinguishers to nurture a healthy work environment, free from any diseases or pathogens.
The Municipality is committed to ensuring health & safety of the community by commanding beauty centres and salons of various categories and activities to follow all health requirements regarding the barbers and workers. The civic body stressed the importance of proper use of shaving tools, proper sterilisation, salon cleanliness, and workers’ attire. The Municipality also invited the attention of all salon workers to show their occupational health cards upon request, vowing to exercise zero tolerance against those flouting rules and regulations to enhance the safety of all.
The Municipality uncovered several malpractices spotted by inspectors during the campaign that constitutes blatant violations of laws including improper use of sterilisers such as failing to replace the sterilisers for six months or more, whereas regulations stipulate for replacing these devices every two days. Workers were instructed not to keep razors inside autoclaves all the time, and instead, keeping them in a special, sterilised and clean toolbox as per the health stipulations set by the Municipality.
The municipal inspectors briefed salon workers on the public hygiene, especially removing hair cuttings immediately after shaving, warning them the violators shall be ticketed and recurrent violators shall be slapped with a fine as per the Municipality’s laws. On the other hand, compliance with the laws leaves a good impression among customers about the shop.
The awareness campaign also included disease-prevention tips where saloon workers were reminded to wear masks, and a grace period was given for compliance. Otherwise, offence tickets shall be issued, and legal actions taken in case of recurrence. The Municipality gave a week’s time for violating barbershops to remove makeshift washstands and comply with the laws stated in the license, reminding them of the proper way to place them.
The municipal inspectors stressed that shop owners must abide by the security and prevention procedures to preserve public safety, in line with the Municipality's drive that calls for meeting health & safety requirements and nurturing a safe community, which the Municipality seeks to realise under its strategy for a promising future.
