AUC Launches AI Journalism Diploma

The Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism at The American University in Cairo (AUC) announced the launch of its new AI Journalism Diploma, a pioneering program designed to equip journalists and media professionals with the skills to navigate the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence in media. Set to open for applications in November 2025 and launch in April, the program will provide participants with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate and leverage AI technologies in news production, storytelling and digital media innovation.

Hussein Amin, professor of journalism and mass communication and director of the Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism, highlighted the significance of the program. “We are a center of excellence. We are always looking to include new avenues for professional development, and artificial intelligence is the cutting edge. The media world is changing, and we’re here to help students leverage this change and become changemakers themselves,” he said.

The six-month diploma includes five courses delivered in five-week modules, with two synchronous class meetings per week complemented by additional resources and assessments. The curriculum is designed to help participants use AI to enhance efficiency, improve data management, strengthen newsroom organization, and innovate in audience engagement and content production. A dedicated course on AI ethics ensures graduates prioritize transparency, accountability, and public trust.

Dina Saad ’94, ’96, associate director of professional development at the Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism, emphasized the combination of practical and theoretical learning. “AI is being used across all fields. A specialized study for journalists will continue to highlight student excellence and bring the Kamal Adham Center to the forefront,” she said.

The program’s curriculum was developed after a year-long market study conducted with AUC’s Center for Learning and Teaching and consultations with international subject-matter experts to ensure alignment with emerging AI tools and industry needs. The diploma targets journalists and media professionals across the Arab world. Applicants must demonstrate bilingual proficiency in Arabic and English to work effectively with several machine-learning platforms.

Amin concluded that AI can help people if it’s being used in the right way, noting: “We are developing an excellent curriculum to help journalists understand this and shape the future of media leadership.”
