Abu Dhabi’s Burjeel Hospital today announced it has successfully completed the Middle East’s first spine surgery to be conducted on the advanced lateral-to-prone (L2P) platform, an innovation delivered by global medical-technology provider Hill-Rom.

“It is a great honour for us to be working with one of the leading global medical technology companies. The top-quality bed provided by Hill -Rom fits perfectly into our facility and the successful surgery reflects on our journey to maintain our standards as a highly reliable organization. As leaders in the healthcare sector, we at Burjeel Hospital firmly believe that advanced technology and innovation is ushering a new era in quality care. It is enabling us to do so much more and also creating the best possible outcomes for our patients.” said, Mr. John Sunil, CEO, Burjeel Hospital.

The procedure named oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF), which was carried out on April 23, 2019, used Hill-Rom’s Allen Advance Table L2P Platform, which is specifically designed for flexibility and safety during complex surgical operations.

“The new technology provided by Hill-Rom through the Allen L2P Advance Surgical Table allows to reposition patients with an assurance of causing no harm and providing easy access for surgeons to reposition their patients.” said, Prof. Amr El Shawarbi, Consultant Neurosurgeon and Medical Director of Neurosciences (VPS), who performed the surgery. “The L2P platform will shorten surgery time, reduce tissue injury, ensure better and safer performance to allow patients early mobilization and reduce the amount of anesthesia given to them.”

The Hill-Rom Allen Advance Table L2P Platform delivers an easy-to-use, flexible patient-positioning system for lateral spine surgery, also enabling smooth patient repositioning from lateral to prone, via Hill-Rom's 90-degree patient-rotation technology. A carbon-fibre platform provides superior fluoroscopic access during surgical procedures and an integrated, inflatable air-bladder provides further flexibility in patient movement. The system also locks at 90-degree intervals, features C-Arm and O-Arm access, and is functional for patients up to 181kg.

“Burjeel Hospital has taken a bold step forward in the enhancement of patient outcomes with the successful performance of the region’s first spine surgery to be carried out using an advanced L2P platform,” said Hisham Hout, President, Middle East Africa, Turkey & Indian Sub-Continent at Hill-Rom. “Hill-Rom’s Allen Advance Table series is at the very centre of our mission to improve treatment outcomes for every patient and caregiver. The system’s versatility benefits the entire process and all of its stakeholders, delivering comfort, security and flexibility of treatment options during procedures.”

The advanced movement system allows surgical staff to reposition patients from a lateral to prone position with decreased manual intervention, greatly enhancing time savings, as well as the security of patient wellbeing and enhanced long-term wellbeing of caregivers.

Samer Masri, Managing Director, FourMed said, “Our mission is to provide high quality, innovative and cost-effective solutions to the healthcare sector in the region. Hill-Rom has been a frontrunner in delivering superior quality products and services and better understand patient requirements. We are pleased to associate with them and continue our efforts to deliver service excellence across all areas of patient care. Hill-Rom’s healthcare solutions in concert with Burjeel Hospital’s expertise are driving better patient outcomes, and we are proud to support their journey.”

The art of healing: A new standard in healthcare

It is not just about the cure. It is not only about the equipment. It is not merely about the facilities. At Burjeel Hospital, we are of the firm belief that the process of healing is much more than curing a medical condition in a clinical environment. Amidst all the medical advancements of the modern world, it is easy to forget that those who are not of sound health sometimes need something more than a sophisticated medical environment at their disposal.
