Burjeel Hospital Performs Middle East’s First Spine Surgery Using Hill-Rom’s Advanced Lateral-To-Prone Platform
Abu Dhabi’s Burjeel Hospital today announced it has successfully completed the Middle East’s first spine surgery to be conducted on the advanced lateral-to-prone (L2P) platform, an innovation delivered by global medical-technology provider Hill-Rom.

The procedure named oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF), which was carried out on April 23, 2019, used Hill-Rom’s Allen Advance Table L2P Platform, which is specifically designed for flexibility and safety during complex surgical operations.
“The new technology provided by Hill-Rom through the Allen L2P Advance Surgical Table allows to reposition patients with an assurance of causing no harm and providing easy access for surgeons to reposition their patients.” said, Prof. Amr El Shawarbi, Consultant Neurosurgeon and Medical Director of Neurosciences (VPS), who performed the surgery. “The L2P platform will shorten surgery time, reduce tissue injury, ensure better and safer performance to allow patients early mobilization and reduce the amount of anesthesia given to them.”
The Hill-Rom Allen Advance Table L2P Platform delivers an easy-to-use, flexible patient-positioning system for lateral spine surgery, also enabling smooth patient repositioning from lateral to prone, via Hill-Rom's 90-degree patient-rotation technology. A carbon-fibre platform provides superior fluoroscopic access during surgical procedures and an integrated, inflatable air-bladder provides further flexibility in patient movement. The system also locks at 90-degree intervals, features C-Arm and O-Arm access, and is functional for patients up to 181kg.
