Symbolic tree-planting confirms DUBAL’s national pride
Reflecting the national pride that permeates the organization, Dubai Aluminium, DUBAL, today expressed its tangible support for the Union Tree initiative launched by H H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai) to commemorate the 41st UAE National Day, by planting a tree outside its corporate head office in Jebel Ali. Abdulla Kalban (President & CEO) did the ceremonial honours, in the presence of DUBAL’s senior executives and other employees.
“DUBAL operates one of the world’s largest single-site primary aluminium smelters but, as an entirely state-owned corporation, is intensely proud of its UAE roots,” says Kalban. “This is reflected in our pro-active investment in initiatives that support the social and economic development goals of the UAE; our well-established Emiratization policy and associated initiatives; and our commitment to sustainability principles – which include preserving the environment. The tree planted today has pride of place on our 480 hectare site, its location symbolising the prime importance of national unity and DUBAL’s dedication to fulfilling the vision of our leaders to continue building a prosperous country, for the benefit of future generations.”
Kalban adds that trees have been planted on the DUBAL site since 1980, soon after the commissioning of the smelter complex at the end of 1979, with the aim of creating an aesthetically pleasant environment and a contiguous habitat for wild plant and animal life. Today DUBAL has a well-established green belt that is home to approximately 1,840 trees, including species that are pollutant-sensitive, thus providing an early warning system for higher than expected emission levels.
