Al Bustan Centre and Residence, the popular hotel apartment among visiting tourists and businessmen in the heart of Dubai, observed Earth Hour, the energy-saving initiative celebrated around the world to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take simple steps towards reducing the harmful effects of global warming.

Across the United Arab Emirates, 173 organizations, businesses and government offices, 40 schools and major landmarks officially participated in the green initiative, not to mention hundreds of households, switching off their lights in unison to effectively cut down on their electricity consumption.  Authorities earlier said that the collective effort is expected to save up to 195 tons of carbon emissions and cut back on 260,000 megawatts of electricity consumption. Dubai was the first Arab city to participate in Earth Hour in 2008 to spread awareness amongst community members on the need and importance of conserving electricity and water.

Staff and guests of Al Bustan Centre and Residence including shopping mall tenants participated in the campaign by switching off unnecessary lights around the property’s complex for one hour. They also gathered outside the lobby of the property to hold a candle light ceremony.

Moussa El Hayek, Chief Operating Officer of Al Bustan Centre & Residence said: “Global warming is a serious issue that affects each of us and taking a small step towards bringing positive change will have a huge effect in the long run. We need to show that we care about our planet by observing the occasion and taking energy-friendly measures that will contribute towards a greener Earth. We are very pleased that several of our guests joined the earth hour celebration and showed their support towards this important issue.”

The global event also saw other iconic structures such as Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, Petronas Towers, Taiper 101, the Effel Tower, the Great Wall of China, the Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab turn their lights off for one hour.  Most parts of the UAE were plunged into darkness and iconic landmarks such as the Bur Khalifa and Burj Al Arab were blacked out for one hour on Saturday evening for Earth Hour 2013, the world’s largest environmental action on climate change.
