Environment Society of Oman has planted 30 juniper trees in Jebal Al Akhdar in memory of Dareen Mehdi, a Board Member of ESO who had passed away in July 2020.

The Environment Society of Oman (ESO), in collaboration with Oman Botanic Garden (OBG), the Royal Oman Police, the Office of the Wali of Jabal Al Akhdar, and Jabal Al Akhdar Municipality, has planted 30 juniper trees in Jebal Al Akhdar in memory of Dareen Mehdi, a Board Member of ESO who had passed away in July 2020. The planting was part of a larger event to celebrate her life and legacy, which included a memorial event held on the 9th of November, generously hosted by the newly opened dusitD2 Naseem Resort Jabal Akhdar, attended by her colleagues, friends and family.

HH Sayyida Tania Al Said, ESO President, said, “Dareen was a powerful public figure who dedicated her life to raising environmental awareness and empowering young people. She was vibrant, brave, and a role model to all who knew her. By honoring her in this way, we are not only paying homage to her but carrying on her legacy and fulfilling some of the work that she so passionately sought to achieve.”

Upon finishing a degree in Biotechnology at Sultan Qaboos University, Dareen started work as an Environmental Education Specialist at OBG, where she promoted environmental preservation in the local community and highlighted traditional practices. Dareen completed her master’s degree. in Conservation Science at Imperial College London, after which she returned to OBG. She later became a member of ESO’s Executive Board, where she was elected for three consecutive terms. Throughout her career, Dareen took part in many community events, initiated environmental competitions, educational projects, led and participated in judging panels and had a genuine and vast impact on peoples’ lives through her enriching contribution on various media channels.
