GEMS Education collaborates with Singularity University to provide 21st century learning solutions
GEMS Education is collaborating with Singularity University, a Silicon Valley-based educational institute and business accelerator, to provide its students with 21st century insight and skills needed to succeed in a world of exponential change.
GEMS and Singularity University will jointly develop key educational programmes, beginning with a 20-week academically and intellectually stimulating, applied skills-based course for GEMS students aged 14-18 and available to these students following the UK, US, IB and Indian curricula. This course will be developed by some of the world’s leading experts and authorities on exponential thinking and technologies, and will significantly and uniquely enhance the curriculum offered to GEMS students.
Dino Varkey, Managing Director, GEMS Education, said: “The world has witnessed massive change in the last few decades, and the pace of change is increasing faster than we could have ever imagined. Students need to become the architects, rather than passive bystanders, of their own future. As a result of the jointly developed GEMS-Singularity University programmes, our students will better understand the opportunities and risks associated with exponential technologies and their impact on society, career pathways and life choices.”
The bespoke GEMS-Singularity University programmes will allow students to explore specific exponential technologies in great depth, learn from the world’s leading experts, and apply this new exponential thinking to a range of futures-based scenarios. Students will be exposed to some of today’s leading innovations and learn how they will shape the future
Rob Nail, CEO and Associate Founder, Singularity University, said: “Our future is being shaped by a number of exponential technologies, most of which we are only vaguely aware. Employed wisely, these technologies - ranging from artificial intelligence to nanotechnology to digital biology - will help us solve some of humanity’s greatest challenges. With the right skills and mentors, our young people will be empowered to make great contributions not only in the future, but today as well. It is therefore important for them to be equipped with the knowledge of how exponential growth will impact their own future and careers.
“We are privileged to work with an organisation that is seeking to transform traditional education and rethinking what the future of schools and learning looks like. Through GEMS Education, we are able to work within a global educational ecosystem that can integrate new content and pedagogy.”
Speaking to the future potential of the collaboration, Brett Schilke, Director of Impact & Next Generation Engagement, Singularity University, said: “Together, we envision the creation of several learning and innovation experiences that will enable young people to master their own futures, and to make meaningful contributions to solving the world’s most daunting problems, thereby positively impacting billions of lives.”
In 1959, two teachers, KS Varkey and his wife Mariamma, arrived in Dubai.
At the time, Dubai was a burgeoning trade centre on the Arabian Gulf. The Varkey family had left Kerala, India to seek a better life for their family. What they found was a real need to educate children arriving in the city from around the world.
Their son, Sunny, added a visionary’s ambition to a practitioner's experience. From simple roots in a family of teachers, GEMS Education, is today an international company with schools and education services across the Middle East. We still share the same mission - to provide a quality education to everyone.
