GEMS students excel while representing UAE at World Scholar’s Cup

100 GEMS students represented the UAE against 1000 high achieving students from schools around the world and have excelled in a number of categories, in this year’s World Scholar’s Cup - Global Round, Bangkok.

The students from Cambridge International School, Dubai Modern High School, GEMS Wellington Academy, GEMS World Academy, Jumeirah College, GEMS Our Own English High School, Dubai, Our Own High School, Al Warqa’a and Winchester School, Jebel Alidid exceptionally well, with many placing in the top 3 in their respective categories.

The performances by the teams were so good that many of them have qualified to participate in a Tournament of Champions at Yale University in September. This includes teams from Dubai Modern High School, Jumeirah College, GEMS Our Own English High School, Dubai, Cambridge International School, and Our Own High School, Al Warqa’a. They will battle the highest achieving students of the US academic decathlon programme.

In the team award categories, Our Own English High School received 3^rd in the senior Debating competition and Jumeirah College received 2^nd in the junior Writing competition.

Some of the individual toppers include:

Sara Syed from Cambridge International School received 1^st in the Senior Writing award category.

Md. Shamroukh from Our Own High School, Al Warqa’a received 2^nd in the senior Science award category.

Prayag Kalathingal from Our Own High School, Al Warqa’a finished 3^rd in the junior division of the Current Affairs and the Art awards categories.

Atul Ghoshal from Our Own High School, Al Warqa’a received 3^rd in the senior Science award category and 3^rd in Current Affairs category.

Arjun Mehrotra from Dubai Modern High School placed 3^rd in the senior Literature award category and received an honourable mention in the overall senior individual award category.

Sanjayan Pradeepkumar Sreekala from Our Own High School, Al Warqa’a received 3^rd in the senior Literature award category.

Taher Kathawala from GEMS Wellington Academy received 3^rd in the junior Science award category.

Aishwarya Vaithyanathan from GEMS Our Own English High School, Dubai received 3^rd in the senior Debating competition category.

The World Scholar’s Cup is an academic programme in which teams of three, study materials from a range of disciplines, such as Literature, History, the Arts, Science and Current Affairs, and they compete in persuasive writing, debating, a quiz and an examination. The programme is challenging and, at the Global Round, pits schools against some of the highest performing academic schools in the world.

Each of the teams from the UAE qualified for the finals after completing first the Dubai Round of the competition at Dubai Modern High School and then the Middle Eastern round, at Jumeirah College and GEMS World Academy.
