The Education Development Institute (EDI) and The Learning Centre (TLC), under the umbrella of Qatar Foundation’s (QF) Pre-University Education (PUE), jointly held an orientation event for around 200 new teachers who will join QF schools this year.

The event, organized to give educators a better cultural and linguistic understanding of their new environment, took place at Awsaj Academy, in Education City. Sessions demonstrated how learners can master a language through effective language strategies, and focused on approaches to teaching and learning, helping the teachers align themselves with the goal of improving the language proficiency of all students in QF schools.

Joanna Moe, Assistant Director, EDI, said: “We want to ensure that new teachers receive ongoing professional learning in order to have a greater understanding of ways to support students.”

Pedagogical sessions conducted during the event focused on differences in the use of Arabic and English in teaching and learning; the planning involved in developing and delivering the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum; and strategies to enhance vocabulary. Each session also highlighted the importance of embedding language instruction in every classroom, a key component of the IB program.

EDI, a center of excellence in professional development and lifelong learning, was established by QF to support the growth of the educational community within Qatar and internationally, through sessions such as the recent orientation event; while TLC helps every child become a successful learner by supporting all QF teaching staff through providing expertise and resources.
