Qatar will allow investors to borrow to buy into initial public offerings (IPOs) of new firms, government and banking sources declared. Leveraging has helped small investors ride financial market booms in Gulf countries such as the UAE.
According to press reports, banking sources said borrowing would only be allowed for IPOs of newly formed firms and not to already established companies. The sources added the decision could be announced before the Eid holidays, in time for the QR4.1 billion ($1.13bn) IPO of a Qatari bank, which opens on January 15.
