Qatar plans to build the first free trade zone as part of a major project for the new Doha Port, according to Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, Chairman of Customs and Ports General Authority.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim told Al Sharq that the new port, to be built on a 500-hectare area reclaimed from the sea, four kilometres east of Doha International Airport, will be linked to the coast through an 8.5 km-long bridge.
He added the cost of the new project would be approximately QR748m, which is much less than the cost of other ports in the region.
The new port, with the capacity to handle three million container ships a year compared to the current 100,000 ships, will have international standing and will compete with other ports in the region, he said.
