A Russian consortium will rebuild the 1.2 million megawatt power plant of Al-Yussofiah, south of Baghdad. Reconstruction of the plant, which was destroyed in the 1991 Gulf War, is expected to render power cuts in the country less frequent, reported Al-Zawra. A number of firms included in the consortium have already begun re-equipping the facility.

Iraqi power stations were targets of the US-led air strikes during the Gulf War. Reconstruction of damaged plants has been difficult since the United Nations (UN) imposed sanctions on the country after its invasion of Kuwait in 1990. However, with the UN’s oil-for-food program, which came into effect in 1996, Iraq has the option of exporting crude to pay for imports of essential goods, including equipment for the electricity sector. — (menareport.com)
