Cairo-based Sakhr Software Co. has launched its www.tarjim.com.sa, a website offering free English-to-Arabic translation services. Previously, the service was available only in Saudi Arabia in beta form.
According to a company statement, the site, which is powered by Sakhr’s proprietary Machine Translation Engine, will translate any English text into Arabic within seconds, with “acceptable accuracy.” English texts for translation are restricted to 10 lines in length, either typed directly or cut and pasted from other applications (Word, Email…etc).
With Tarjim.com, the translated texts preserve the original layout and adjust the right-to-left direction. They also allow the user to continue Web navigation in Arabic by clicking on the links in the translated page.
In order to achieve greater accuracy in translation, users can specify the text’s subject-field, and Tarjim.com will search for a more specialized lexicon, although possibly at the expense of preserving the original layout. Special user options also include the ability to transliterate rarely used words, such as proper nouns (used to name people, places etc.) and abbreviations.
Tarjim.com also offers Arabic-language users the option to search the web using popular English-language search engines. Query results are automatically translated into Arabic.
Although automatic on-line translation services are free, full editing and translation services are also offered at standard rates. For the English speaking users, Sakhr plans to offer free Arabic-to-English translating service by year’s-end. ― (Albawaba-MEBG)
