The Saudi Arabian Eastern cement company, Al-Sharqiya, has recently been awarded the ISO 9002 quality award. Prior to receiving this award, all of the company’s technical, administrative and service operations were reviewed by the German TUV company, which is responsible for granting the ISO certificates throughout the world.
On August 28th, Al-Jazirahnewspaper reported that Al-Sharqiya’s director general, Zamil Al-Morqen stated that this award would encourage his company to continue to excel and improve its performance.
Recent statistics indicate that the volume of cement deliveries to the local market has been on the rise. During January –April 2000, cement consumption rose by 13 percent compared to the corresponding period of 1999, reaching 4,838,000 tons.
During the first four months of this year, the production level of the eight domestic cement companies reached 5,527,000 tons, a 9.6 percent increment compared to the 5,042,000 tons produced during the corresponding period of last year.
Exports grew by 5.3 percent during the period of January-April 2000. This industry currently exports cement to Yemen, Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Spain.
