The first Siemens gas turbine-generators at the Az Zour power plant in Kuwait were connected to the grid in time for the hot summer months. Representatives of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Energy recently opened the power plant. Upon completion in 2005, eight gas turbine-generators will provide approximately 1,000 megawattsof power to Kuwait.
Siemens Power Generation (PG) is building the power plant as a turnkey project.
After a construction period of 13 months, the first unit of the Az Zour plant in Kuwait, located approximately 80 kilometers south of the capital Kuwait City, was synchronized with the grid for the first time in May 2004. The second andthird units followed a month later. For Kuwait, commissioning of the gas turbinesin time for the hot summer months is particularly important because, during thisperiod, power demand rises three to four times that required in the winter months. The owner of the Az Zour power plant is the Ministry of Energy (MoE). In addition to the eight V94.2 gas turbines, Siemens PG also is supplying the associated generators and the electrical and instrumentation & controls (I&C) systems. After completion, the plant can be run on both natural gas and oil. The total investmentof Az Zour is approximately EUR 390 million. (menareport.com)
