Sudan recorded a trade deficit of $121 million in the first four months of 2002 compared with previous year’s $108 million deficit, reported Xinhua. According to the nations Ministry of Finance, Al-Zubair Ahmed Al-Hassan, Sudan’s exports reached $395 million from January to April compared with $362 million from the same period last year.
He attributed the rise to the lifting of the ban on Sudanese animal exports by Saudi Arabia and several other Gulf states. Some 90 percent of Sudanese exports originate from the agricultural sector.
The major export commodities include cotton, Gum Arabic, oil seeds and livestock. The bulk of the North African state’s products are directed towards the European Union and the Arab countries. — (menareport.com)
