A Syrian parliament member and industrialist, Riyadh Seif, was recently quoted in Al-Mustaqbal, saying, “Although Syria endows tremendous resources and produces 650,000 barrels of oil per day, the local per capita income is still extremely low.”
The per capita income in Syria does not, in fact, exceed $850 per annum, compared with $3,248 in Lebanon and $2,300 in Tunisia.
A recently publicized economic report showed that the annual growth rate of the per capita income in the Middle East is only two percent, placing this region’s economies among the weakest in the world. The report indicated that in Africa this figure is also relatively insignificant, with a three percent growth rate.
Additional results revealed that Asia has an annual per capita income growth rate of six percent, while the industrialized countries enjoy a nine percent annual growth rate. –(Albawaba-MEBG)
