The tenth session of the Intergovernmental Follow-up and Coordination Committee on Economic Cooperation among Developing Countries (IFCC), will be held in Tehran from 18 to 23 August 2001.
The six-day conference of the 77 developing countries (G-77) will be attended by senior delegations from 133 countries, reported the official Iranian news agency, IRNA, Saturday, August 4.
United Nations Development Program (UNDP) administrator Mark Malloch Brown will also attend the conference, which is aimed at discussing the numerous challenges faced by developing countries.
Iran assumed the presidency role of the group in January 2001, taking over from Nigeria. The group was established in 1964 by 77 developing countries, as the largest third-world coalition in the United Nations. Although the number of member states in the organization grew to 133, the original name was retained.
The group provides the means for developing countries to articulate and promote collective economic interests, enhance its joint negotiation capacity on major international economic issues and to promote economic and technical cooperation. — (Mena Report)
