The British telecom equipment company Telspec will supply Telecom Egypt (TE) and the National Services Project Organization (NSPO) with digital access solutions, aimed at boosting the public network’s service capacity to serve more subscribers.

TE Chairman Akail Bashir explained that the implementation of Telspec’s pair gain technology was an "urgent and fast solution to avoid waiting lists in certain areas of the country". He explained that pair gain systems are principally being deployed to accommodate new subscribers in areas of high population with inadequate telephone cable networks.

Telspec's TelMax digital pair gain systems are applied to existing copper subscriber lines, to electronically boost the communication capacity so that a single copper subscriber line can carry up to 12 separate telephone channels. This allows extra subscribers to be added to the telephone network without requiring the installation of a new subscriber line for each new subscriber.

Assisted by Telspec's local partner PACC Electronic Engineering Co, the first 5,000 systems were successfully installed and tested in the summer of 2001, with the implementation program is to be completed in December 2001.

Egypt’s national carrier TE and NSPO—a Ministry of Defense subsidiary established to control projects in the civilian sectors of the economy—have previously placed an order for Telspec's TelMax digital pair gain systems in order to provide 62,500 extra subscriber lines on a pilot trial basis. Building on from that contract, a further agreement has been formed for the provision of an extra 30,000 lines. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The digitally upgraded lines can also be used for ISDN services such as Internet access as well as voice calls. This feature means that an individual subscriber can, for example, be assigned both a telephone and an ISDN channel - both over the same copper wire to the premises. These channels are independent, so that when the subscriber is using the Internet, it does not prevent the simultaneous making or receiving of telephone calls.

Telspec is one of the United Kingdom’s largest independent communications equipment suppliers with customers in more than 35 countries. The company develops, manufactures and supplies specialized communications systems and solutions for use in networks that carry Internet and telephony services. These include specialized switching and service nodes for the base network as well as access and customer premises systems for voice and high-speed Internet services. Founded in 1975, the company employs more than 350 people at its headquarters and R&D center in Kent and its manufacturing plant in Scotland. — (menareport.com)
