The US-led Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA), in conjunction with the US Department of State, is expanding its Fulbright Scholarship program in Iraq to include the Fulbright American Studies Institutes Program and the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program for 2004.
The resumption of the Fulbright Scholarship program in Iraq was announced in October, after a hiatus of more than a dozen years. While the selection process for that initial group of Fulbright Scholars has drawn to a close, these two additional Fulbright programs represent expanded opportunities for Iraqis to study and teach in America.
The Fulbright American Studies Institutes Program is a six-week post-graduate level seminar in the United States designed to promote the development and improvement of courses regarding the US at colleges and universities abroad. The 2004 Fulbright American Studies Institutes will occur between June and August 2004. Eligible applicants include faculty, regardless of rank, who are currently teaching at Iraqi universities and colleges.
The FLTA Program is an opportunity for Iraqi teachers of English to refine their teaching skills and strengthen their English proficiency while, at the same time, improve the instruction of foreign languages in American universities. The FLTA program requires a fellow to spend one year at a United States university teaching their language and enrolling in at least two US studies each semester.
The Fulbright program is managed by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. — (menareport.com)
