The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will grant the Kingdom of Jordan $50 million in direct support of its balance of payments. The grant is the final portion of a $150 million assistance package to the nation for 2002, reported Petra.
The grant will reduce Jordan’s international debt and support its foreign exchange reserves. The cash transfer will contribute to Jordan's ongoing economic restructuring and reform process, promote investment, stimulate trade, generate employment and create employment.
USAID's program focuses on three strategic objectives in Jordan, improved water resources management, improved access to and quality of reproductive and primary healthcare and increased economic opportunities for Jordanians.
Technical support from the US enabled Jordan to become a member of the World Trade Organization in May 2000. With USAID assistance, a US-Jordan Free Trade agreement was sent to Congress for ratification in January 2001. — (menareport.com)
