Instagram is certainly growing on all of us whether we’re creative users, ie photographers, artists, writers, media persons or anything else in communication or just visual art admirers. Nothing draws attention like pictures or videos, the proverb “a picture is worth one thousand words” rings very true in Instagram’s case. It’s also a smart way to initiate contact in a friendly and cool way unlike Linkedin, Twitter or Facebook where initiating contact is harder and more formal.

Here are some tips for you to get started in the world of Instagram networking:

- Search for any company you’re interested in on social media to find more about it. Mot of businesses have accounts on Facebook and Twitter. After finding out what the company is interested in in terms of skills and type of work, try to reflect that in your account so that if that company views your profile, they will be impressed.

- Post pictures that showcase your knowledge and interest in your field of work. For example, if you are a photographer, take photos of your favorite subjects and display high quality photographing skills through your account.

- Tag the company you’re interested to work for in a relevant post to alert them directly of your content. But don’t over-do it or else it will become spam.

- If you’re a fan of a certain business, try taking a picture of yourself using one of their products or having a good time at one of their venues. Don’t forget to write a meaningful caption and tag them so they can check out your picture.

- Use popular hashtags related to your field and focus your attention on those started by the company. You can also list your skills and specialties as hashtags. Don’t use too many hashtags in one picture thoughor it will make you look professional.

- Engage with the company’s content on Instagram by leaving informative comments that add value. Share your knowledge if relevant and express your admiration and approval.

- If you get lucky and a business account leaves a comment on one of your photos, take initiative and get in touch with the business or professional to introduce yourself and let them know what you do.

- Upload photos of you and other professionals, experts or just interesting people to show off your connections.

- Follow important Instagram accounts in your field.

- Most importantly, be genuine and make sure your Instagram profile represents you.
