More than 3,000 cancer cases were registered last year in Yemen, 40 per cent of them were caused by smoking.

Deputy Director of National Center for Combating Cancer Bumps, Dr. Ali al-Ashowal, said the center was recently supplied with a modern Linear Accelerator set worth $ 3.5 million for treating cancer patients.

According to SABA, Linear Accelerator (LINAC) is the device most commonly used for external beam radiation treatments for patients with cancer. It can also be used in stereotactic radiosurgery similar to that achieved using the gamma knife to targets within the brain.

Al-Ashowal added that the center has now the most modern equipment in addition to 11 consultants.

He indicated that the center was still in need for further support, saying that its budget is YR 450 million which is not enough for supplying it with all required equipment to manage receiving patients who come from different provinces of the country.
