Thousands gathered in Western capitals Saturday to march in support of the Syrian people, AFP reports.

Approximately 1,000 people marched in London with Syrian flags and banners, and a Syria related stencil by graffiti artist Banksy was projected onto Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square.

In France, messages of support were lit up on the Eiffel Tower as hundreds marched in Paris.

“We are here today, three years after the start of the repression and the conflict, to support the Syrians who are there and in our country,” said the head of the French branch of Amnesty International, Genevieve Garrigos.

Groups also gathered in Madrid, Rome, and Washington. The names of Syrians killed in the conflict were read aloud in front of the White House while demonstrators chanted slogans against Syrian President Bashar al Assad.

The Syrian conflict has now raged for three years, claiming at least 140,000 lives and displacing millions.
