The international women's movement FEMEN Thursday pledged to mobilise “an army of naked women to fight the Islamists”, on the backdrop of Tunisia jailing three of their activists on Wednesday.

The Ukrainian feminist faction also said the step comes after “the failure of Chancellor Germany Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, who are shaking hands with the tyrants”, referring to the latest visit of Tunisia Prime Minister Ali Laarayedh, from the ruling Al Nahda party, to Germany.

Their latest topless tactic comes a day after three European activists, who engaged in a topless protest outside the Tunisian Palace of Justice, have been sentenced to four months in prison in Tunisia. Two French women and one German are members of the FEMEN protest group and were sentenced to jail terms over "indecency and assault on morality".

During the court’s session, some of the activists stormed the Tunisian embassy in Stockholm, while others demonstrated in front of the Tunisian embassy in Madrid.

The movement condemned the “unjust ruling the Islamists subjected them to,” according to a statement on their Facebook page.

The FEMEN France Facebook page issued a statement over the verdict soon after it was announced.

"With this decision the Tunisian powers have shown us their own theocratic savagery and demonstrated to the whole world their neglect of international democratic conventions... the women's movement FEMEN will not leave its activists to rot in prison, it calls on the world to stand up for the brave freedom fighters!'

Marguerite Stern, one of the French activists, defended the deployment of the naked army.

“Showing our breasts is not a sexual act. It is a type of activism,” she told the judge, according to The Telegraph.

“In Islam we respect our mothers, our sisters, our wives. Islam respects women and their physical dignity. Public nudity is forbidden. We reject the actions of FEMEN,” one of the prosecution lawyers said during the ruling.

The three European women were arrested in late May after protesting in support of Amina Tyler, a Tunisian-French FEMEN member who was arrested by the Tunis authorities fro spraying grafitti on a wall close to a cemetary.

Tunisia, which is predominantly Muslim, was rocked by the Amina scandal. She is still awaiting a trial on charges of indecency and desecrating a cemetery.
