A woman from a southern Lebanese border town was handed to the Lebanese Army Sunday morning, a UNIFIL spokesman said, hours after Israeli forces reportedly took her into custody.
"On April 28 at 8.30pm an Israeli enemy patrol carried out the abduction of Nohad Dali from the town of Shebaa and took her into occupied Palestinian territory," said a Lebanese Army statement.
UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti confirmed to The Daily Star that the incident had taken place, but could not give details on how or why Dalli was taken into Israeli custody.
"A woman was taken by the [Israeli army] but investigations are continuing into how she crossed [the border]," Tenenti said.
Dali was handed back to the Lebanese Army by Israeli military near the border at around 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Tenenti said. He added that UNIFIL had been at the handover and was now trying to ascertain the exact details of how Dali came to cross the border.
Lebanese Army forces stationed in the area took “the necessary measures” to coordinate with UNIFIL and secure Dalli's return after news of the incident was reported.
No information was immediately available on Dalli’s age or occupation, though she is in “good health” following the incident, Tenenti said.
An Israeli army spokesman told Reuters news agency that "I’m aware of this report and have nothing for you on it at this time."
