A young Arab man tried to end his life by overdosing on anti-epileptic drugs after he allegedly saw his girlfriend with another guy, an official at Sharjah Police said on Sunday.

The Moroccan youth, a 22-year-old university student, carried out his suicide bid on Wednesday night, police said

The decision to end his life came after he was shocked to see his girlfriend with another man — he claimed to see her holding the other man's hand.

Depressed after realizing that his girlfriend was cheating on him, the young man went back home in Sharjah's Al Tawuan district.

Distraught and emotionally shaken, the youngster reportedly popped 24 tablets anti-epileptic drugs and fell unconscious.

His mother, however, managed to curtail his plan and called an ambulance team, who rushed him to the hospital where a medical team saved his life.

The young man is currently receiving treatment at Sharjah's Al Kuwaiti Hospital.

An official at Al Kuwaiti hospital told Gulf News that the man was admitted to the hospital at around 8.30pm and the young man was in critical condition.

The medical staff used a special device to quickly remove the contents of his stomach. The young man was reported to be in stable condition.

The man is placed under police custody and authorities are now investigating the incident.
