After municipal authorities found out a newly-opened Shawarma restaurant in Ras Al Khaimah was serving meat used in previous day business, it was shut down immediately.
Inspectors caught workers in the act after they were tipped off from local residents.
Officials would not name the actual restaurant but said it was a large Shawarma restaurant which had become popular overnight despite its high prices. One Shawarma sandwich sold for Dh7.
Upon receiving the tip that leftover meat was being used, inspectors set up surveillance and watched after hours as workers closed up shop.
“Our inspectors noticed that the workers took what is left of the meat and put it in the refrigerator,” said Khalifa Al Maktoum, Director of Public Health at the municipality.
“But they decided to raid the restaurant on the next day to make sure that meat is served again to customers…after they were sure about such a practice in the morning, the inspectors raided the restaurant and shut it down.”
At this time, along with the shutdown, the municipality also imposed a “large” fine against the restaurant as reported by The Arabic Language Daily.
